From the age of seventeen, Patrick Gallois studied flute with Jean-Pierre Rampal at the Conservatory of Paris, and became flute soloist in the Orchestre Nationale de Lille.
At twenty-one he became the first flute in the Orchestre National de France under the direction of L. Maazel. Over the next seven years he played and recorded under the baton of renowned conductors including P. Boulez and S. Ozawa. He studied with L. Bernstein and S. Celibidache and in 1984 decided to devote himself to a solo career, which led him to tour the world, starting with a tour in Japan, where he was so successful that he signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon, for whom he recorded 10 CDs. Given his predilection for contemporary music, Patrick Gallois is the dedicatee of numerous compositions by contemporary composers. He was artistic director of the Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä for nine years. He has recorded more than 40 CDs for Naxos, 25 of them as conductor of early Haydn symphonies, Mauricio Kagel and Peteris Vasks.
